Thomas Münzel, MD is senior professor in the Department of Cardiology at the University Medical Center at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Cardiologist and vascular biologist.
He received his postdoctoral training as a vascular biologist at the Institute of Applied Physiology, Professor Eberhard Bassenge, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, and in the laboratories of David G. Harrison, Emory University, Atlanta, GA, USA with a focus on endothelial function, nitrate tolerance and oxidative stress.
He is the initiator of the Gutenberg Health Study, one of the largest prospective cohort studies in the world, and also the founding director of the Integrated Research and Treatment Center (IFB) Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis, CTH, in Mainz, funded by the Ministry of Science.
The Department of Cardiology Mainz is also part of the German Center for Cardiovascular Research together with Frankfurt and Bad Nauheim. Since 2011, his research group has focused on environmental risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
In 2017, Thomas Münzel led a research consortium supported by the Boehringer Ingelheim Fund entitled: "Novel and neglected cardiovascular risk factors with a focus on noise, air pollution and cardiovascular diseases".
As a senior professor, the research focus is primarily on studies on the combined effects of various environmental stressors such as noise and particulate matter on cardiovascular health.
